GIRLS WHO GET IT-BETTY WHITE
Sweet Betty!! This woman personifies the words 'staying power' and after SEVENTY years in show-biz, a new generation is discovering her for the first time. Fans today know Betty as a sassy grandma who comes with the one liners. 25 years ago she was a the simple minded "Rose" (no one does deadpan better) on Golden Girls. In the 25 years prior, she briefly hosted a talk show, had a few film roles, and smiled as the celebrity guest on game shows, however her work in Television - a new world when she started - maked her a pioneer for the women who came after her.
In the 1950's, before Lucille Ball came along, Betty co-founded a production company, wrote, produced and starred in the comedy "Life With Elizabeth" in front of a live audience. Her show was such a hit, it received national syndication, aired for 3 years and Betty won her first Emmy! Again, this is in 1952 (before my mother was born!!). Betty was one on the only women in TV to have full creative control in front and behind the camera. GO BETTY!
The most popular programs of the 1970's - Mary Tyler Moore and Maude - starred our Betty and the 80's brought 'Mama's Family' and later reunited her with Bea, Rue and Estelle. Considering Betty was the eldest, it's ironic that she remains as the sole surviving Golden Girls cast member. She has been showered with awards and nominations from SAG to MTV, and has consistently fought for the rights of animals throughout her long career. America has fallen for Betty all over again, begging her to host Saturday Night Live and most recently, creating a comic book series dedicated to her.
Beautiful inside and out, she reminds us that 'it works as long as you work it!'
