GIRLS WHO GET IT- MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN
Measha Brueggergosman is a perfectly-balanced juxtaposition: one part silly girl next door who sings Justin Timberlake in her bathroom, one part classically-trained vocalist who has been revered on stages worldwide.
Hailing from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Measha took the music industry by storm with her powerful pipes. A Canadian soprano who performs both as an opera singer and concert artist, Measha knew from an early age that her voice was destined to be heard.
A dedicated music student at seven years old, Measha grew up singing in her church choir and listening to classical music on CBC Radio. Focused on perfecting her skills, she trained with a local voice coach as a teenager and was soon recognized for her talent, later invited to spend her summers at the Boston Conservatory on music scholarships.
A longtime lover of expressing herself vocally, Measha graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.Mus. degree, a success that led her to pursue a Master's degree at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany. She has since performed as a professional singer all over the world, including at Carnegie Hall and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, as well as with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Adding to Measha’s already impressive repertoire is the 2007 designation of Goodwill Ambassador for the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), a charity working for better health in Africa. In her role, she travelled to the war-affected village of Patongo where she used her voice as a form of musical therapy for the local children.
In June 2009, Measha suffered a heart condition and took some time off to recover from open heart surgery. Not allowing this obstacle to hold her back, she returned to the stage later that year to perform at the Toronto International Film Festival.
To date, Measha has also been the recipient of the prestigious Canada Council and Chalmers Performing Arts grants, and has been nominated for a Juno Award not once, but twice. In 2008, she won for Classical Album of the Year. One of the few Black singers in her field, Measha has established herself as a trailblazer and role model to future generations.
A brilliant talent breaking the music mould, Measha Brueggergosman is a Girl Who Gets It.
