GIRLS WHO GET IT - JILL SCOTT

8:10 AM Posted by MS.NOVA

Though she is a beautiful singer, gifted songwriter, dedicated actress and soulful poet, this list of talents merely scratches the surface of Jill Scott’s appeal. A quiet storm in the entertainment industry, there’s no denying that her music contains the same elements as her legendary predecessors’: songs that are capable of seizing your soul, keeping your attention and making you swoon.

If I sound biased, it’s because I absolutely am. I deemed Jill my favourite singer a long time ago and you’ll often find me listening to her sultry, playful albums on repeat. Between the truthful lyrics, the multi-dimensional instrumentals and the unexpected giggling, there’s an honestly in Jill’s music that is utterly seductive. Her charm, however, stems beyond these qualities, as she continually uses her voice to address issues that are bigger than her.

It seems to me that a song is never just a song for Jill. Switching effortlessly from the purr of a kitten to the roar of a lion, she consistently communicates messages of love, lust, strength, independence and discrimination. Undaunted, she calls out everyone from her exes to George Bush, where “truth” is always the underlying theme in her work. Over the course of her career, Jill’s has earned three Grammys for her talent, using her devastating divorce to fuel her most recent album.

When she’s not wooing us with her creative endeavours, Jill can be found giving back to underserved communities. Founder of the Blues Babe Foundation, she is committed to assisting college-bound students artistically and academically by providing them with programs that promote leadership and academic excellence.

An artist who uses honesty to both entertain and educate, Jill Scott is a Girl Who Gets It.
