so many of you have asked me hair questions - curly hair, mixed hair , i need a change after a rough time, or "I'm still rockin' The Rachel". from now on, i'll be posting some hurr curr tips in the ADVICE section with help from my beautiful and uber talented friend, DJ LISSA MONET.

some may know me as dj lissa monet aka "the go to girl" but even though i eat, breathe, sleep music, i have always been into everything hair - the different styles, the plethora of new [and old] products, the myths and most importantly the personal effects it has had on my life.

i met nova a LONG time ago when we both worked in the music industry - nova in the marketing department at sonybmg and me an eager beaver intern who soaked up everything music biz.

we reconnected a few years back when i decided to take this djing thing seriously and shes been an avid reader of my blog, and has been a huge fan of the recent posts i have written on hair growth and hair care.

after years of struggling with my hair for practically all my life, i went the “easy” route and started spending lots of money on weaves….my scalp suffered and my hair suffered – i was taking more care of the weave than i was my own hair. so after a really bad incident at local hair salon which resulted in a horrifying bald spot and thinning hair, i decided to put hair care back into my own hands!

at the end of 2009, i made a personal pact with myself that i would work very hard to be rid of full head weaves in three years. for some of you that read my blog, you are pretty aware of my struggles and revelations with my hair which has kind of turned a bit obsessive.

i am now not necessarily worried about how my hair looks, but how it feels and how HEALTHY it is. ive realized over time that you could have the best and most expensive weaves on, but if your hair is not well taken care of and healthy, you will never be happy with your hair which begins a vicious cycle of covering the problem instead of tackling it head on [pun intended].

im not going to lie, not wearing weaves is a hard process to overcome, so i would never tell anyone to do that ‘cold turkey’. i would work towards partial weaves, to rows, to no tracks at all.

weaves are amazing – they add drama and fullness for special events and is hidden from the hot sun and gives your natural hair a break from the daily wear and tear while on vacation. but damn, don’t you ever want yo’ man to run his hands through your hair without feeling tracks? lolololz

aside from that being one of the reasons for becoming independent of weaves, im very passionate about the HEALTH of hair. struggling with a sensitive scalp all my life, i feel like i owe it to myself to find the root of the problem and give my scalp the natural nourishment it deserves.

so for the past five months i have been my own guinea pig, trying different products and have finally created a regimen for myself that has been effective and most importantly HAS BEEN WORKING.

i have also took it one step further by recently going through the big chop so i can start from scratch and achieve healthy hair from root to tip.

hey listen, in NO WAY am i a licensed hairstylist [although i have been seriously thinking of going back to school], im just passionate and want all my friends to be comfortable about their natural hair. there are so many misconceptions [which i will probably get into later], myths and deeply rooted issues that with some research, a little experimentation and great face-to-face conversation can alleviate some of the issues we have with our hair.

so expect a weekly blog post on stuff like product reviews, techniques from around the web and personal healthy hair journey results that will hopefully motivate you to either be weave independent, more money conscious when buying products or to just care for your hair a little bit more.

love u lots xoxo,
