GIRLS WHO GET IT- DOLLY PARTON
I truly appreciate great song writing and the ability to pour your heart out and put those feelings to music. It would be tough to leave Ms. Dolly Parton out of the royal family of writers. Give that girl a guitar and you have gold. Some of you may not tap your toes to country music, but we all know Dolly. Big boobs, sequins and dirty jokes might be the first things to come to mind. (On Oprah she joked about her appearance, If I have another facelift, I'll have a beard!).
With almost 50 years in music, Dolly is called the Iron Butterfly for her business saavy. Perfect example. When Elvis Presley wanted to cover "I Will Always Love You", which Dolly wrote, he demanded half of the publishing rights (ie: he wanted the permanent royalties for a song he didn't write!). Ms Dolly said "hell to the NO", Elivs walked but when Whitney blew it out the park years later it was Dolly who laughed all the way to the bank.
Her true heart shines on screen just as it does through the speakers. 9 to 5 ( the original 1980's working women's film) and Steel Magnolias (you WILL cry) are classics. Dolly Parton has earned 45 Grammy nominations and countless awards for her philanthropic work, but you haven't made it until a drag queen impersonates you! Her core fan base got a bit itchy about her gay following, Dolly's attitude has been one we should all aspire for. Take me as I am.
The definition of consistency, and there will never be another.
Dolly Parton is a Girl Who Gets It.
