Thanks Lissa!
knowing what i know now about my hair, i used to struggle with my hair type like there was no tomorrow. especially during high school.i had me a little cash from a part-time job and i was spending my friday evenings at the hair salon scanning hair and fashion magazines looking for the next hot hairstyle.
around the time i was a frequent member of the 'sit-and-wait-for-four-hours-before-you-got-into-the-chair-club' the r&b group TOTAL was the hottest thing and their short hairstyles was what everyone wanted to rock. while idolizing kima, keisha and pam i obsessed over keisha's short wavy hair style. so when i showed the stylist the photo, she nodded, relaxed my hair and cut it and i became KEISHA! for about a week...and then i didnt know what to do. my hair felt like it grew out of its relaxer in a matter of days and it was dry and i just couldnt manage the short style.
that was because my 'hair type' was totally different from keisha's hair type. and im sure the hair stylist knew that, but for some reason chose not to tell me. *sigh*
you see, keisha's hair is what some would call a 2b - wavy hair with some what of an 's' curl to it. easy to blow dry and flat iron but could we worn wet without frizzing by just using a little product.
on the flipside, my hair is a 4b - coarse, thick, hair that requires a lot of moisture and protein for structure. requires chemicals and high heat for straightening and could never be worn wet.
i was choosing hairstyles that didnt even fit my hair type and no one was telling me anything! happy to say that once i started my healthy hair journey that was the first thing i learned about myself.
there are various sites on the web that explain in detail different hair types here are some links for you to check out. i hope this helps you understand why some hairstyles work best on some hair types and not others.
happy hair and health,
~lissa
