Q&A-HOW DO I MEET NEW PEOPLE?

12:47 PM Posted by MS.NOVA

Facebook friends I have plenty of. Face to face connections are what I'm missing. 40 people are on my BBM list, and I haven't heard their voices in forever, some in years, and I question what kind of relationship I even have with them. Are we friends if we don't actually speak? We type, but don't talk. Call me old fashioned but it's just not the same.

I'm shy by nature so that makes it tough and it's been since high school that I was on a club or team. I'm not sure what I even like to do for fun anymore. Work has been my life for awhile and my good friends are coupled up or live out of town. So the question is,

How do I meet people?
What do I even say?

    wicked topic!!
my best friend for over 17 years and i moved to LA to expand our clientele for work..during one of my jobs abroad she moved away to another city..so i ended up in a city where i really knew no one...
i was encouraged by my "back home" friends, to go out, network, meet people, discover all that LA has to offer...easier said than done!
i find it so difficult to connect with people especially at my age! i grew up with 3 really good friends and it was just so easy!! we had a unspoken understanding of one another..now here, people dont understand where im coming from, what my expressions mean and especially not my humor!
i come from a jamaican family with jamaican neighbors grown from a west indian culture with a very screwface canadian outlook on life..lol.. people here just dont get it..this makes it very difficult to meet and even socialize with new people..plus they are so "clicky" so thats just the icing for me! i would like to know...how do i meet new people? am i looking in the wrong places? am i expecting them to be like my friends at home? ill be watching the answers to this blog question very closely!!

well young lady, do i have a treat for you! this very subject is what my book is about! i normally answer the Q&A's on the UStream channel, but i know not everyone can tune in (wednesdays @ 9:30pm EST).

joining clubs and teams that you have interest in helps, and connecting w friends of friends is nice too. something that i've been doing more of is hosting a lunch - one sunday a month - and really opening it up to an ecelectic mix of ppl. convo is the focus, not the food or decorations (so its not crazy $$) and its surprising how much people open up to those they feel are neutral and annoymous. i know plenty of cab drivers in toronto who know a litttttle to much about me. i talked, they listened, so i kept talking.

how to do it is what the book is about, along with what you gain when you strip yourself bare for a moment. we do facebook, twitter, BBM, shoot, you and i are friends and i havent heard your voice in months!! though we chat semi-often. technology has connected but disconnected us in a way. you can talk to your girl 1000's of km away, but do you know the person who lives upstairs?

ill rap more about this on UStream, and i'll CALL YOU or we can meet for dessert when you are back in town.
