ADVICE-HAIR HEALTH WITH LISSA MONET

2:56 PM Posted by MS.NOVA

Another day, another hair tip! I recently put some yummy golden, sunkissed Califorina girl highlights in my curls and as much much as I love it, chemicals can dry and fry out the hair. combined that with the sun and oh honey, you might have a real problem.

*short story* I was seeing a boy that moved to Miami and I got my hair highlighted the day before I went for a visit. On the second day, we went to the beach all day, frollicked in the sun and my new blond hair looked gorge with my new tan! Until the next day, when it started to literally break off. It was so bad I ended up chopping my hair off, Halle style! Moral: take care of the hair!!

Lissa has some great deep conditioning tips to help your best accessory stay healthy all summer. The brassy, crunchy beachcomber look works on no one.

pre-poo [definition]: a hot oil or conditioning treatment before you shampoo.

i was introduced to pre-pooing [its okay you can laugh lol] a long time ago but i just had no clue that was the process. remember those vo5 hot oil treatments that you would buy at your local drug store that came in a pack of six? well that process - heating up the oil packets in hot water, putting the oil in the hair and massaging before shampooing that hair was actually what i just described above.

i remember being in high school - i had one of those mary j blige bobs - and spending my part-time job money to buy these hot oil treatments and every week when i would wash my hair it became a staple in my regimen.

you could pre-poo with pretty much anything that adds moisture or 'slip' to the hair. the purpose of pre-pooing before shampooing is to reduce the amount of tangling when massaging the shampoo into the scalp.

here are some products you could use to pre-poo:
coconut oil
olive oil
jojoba oil
emu oil
moroccan/ argan oil **nova's favorite!
phytonectar nourishing oil treatment
or
any moisturizing conditioner [not a protein conditioner]

throw any of the above into your hair and wrap head with saran wrap or cover with a clear plastic cap. at this point you could do one of two things:
sit under a hood dryer for 20 minutes or wrap a towel over your saran wrap or clear plastic cap and do some chores for about an hour or so.

i honestly cant think of any reason NOT to pre-poo except for the fact that this is definitely a step that you would take if you have a lot of time to spare.

next time you wash, try pre-pooing and let me know if you see or feel any changes in your hair!

happy hair & health,
