GIRLS WHO GET IT -CELINE DION
On a recent YYZ-LAX flight, I watched "Celine Through the Eyes of the World" a fantastic documentary tracking the best singer of our generation (she is vocally flawless) on a world tour. After my 5 hour flight and 3 hour time change, I thought about what kind of nerve I'd have to muster in order to pull out a perfect performance the way Celine does. 9 outfit changes, a moving stage and maneuvering those damn wind machines. I was wiped after my measly flight, and just wanted a margarita and a hot bath, never mind singing to tens of thousands of teary fans. Superhero Celine consistently (key word here) blows people away after spending double digits on a plane with her 90 something year old mother, 7 year old son and husband in tow, looking stunning in couture clothes, full of energy and an ever present smile.
She spoke zero English, had bad teeth and no money, but her voice was effortless power and she believed in herself. That 'make it happen' attitude is the reason for success in every area of her life. Her vocal cords have been damaged many times, doctors told her she could not conceive, her husband and manager since she was a teenager, the man who mortgaged his home to pay for her first album, was diagnosed with cancer. Fortune and fame do not protect you from life's blows, but Celine has always reacted with such strength.
As a Canadian, it feels like Celine has always had a presence in my realm of pop culture. She has been a star over half of her young 42 years! I clearly recall where I was the first time I heard 'that voice' (10 years old in an Edmonton mall change-room.) and I might not be her #1 fan, one can't deny that this woman has a God given gift. I'm happy to say I lived to hear it.
Celine's work ethic and dedication to her fans and family are truly an inspiration while her voice is best used for sharing the power of love.
Celine Dion is a Girl Who Get's It.
in the fall of 2005, as the rest of us waited for relief to come to New Orleans,
the ever professional Celine showed her deep humanity and the frustration we all felt through honest tears.
Its not her most flattering moment, but one that encapsulates her beautiful character.
