GIRLS WHO GET IT - JANE LYNCH
One of television’s most recent sensations, Jane Lynch has charmed audiences with her dry wit, comedic timing and statuesque six-foot-tall frame. Best known for her role as the mean-spirited, insult-hurling cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the hit musical-comedy Glee, Jane somehow manages to make viewers root for the underdogs while still craving more from their tormentor.
Laughter aside, Jane’s character sheds light on the serious issue of bullying by giving her target, the Glee Club, every opportunity to rise above her challenges. With every roadblock Sue creates, the show’s message to strive for success and be proud of who you are is drilled into the heads of the Glee’s fans. Winning both an Emmy in 2009 and a Golden Globe in 2011 for her work, alongside earning a Sue Sylvester wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, Jane’s talent for using humour to reach teens hasn’t gone unnoticed by her peers.
Jane isn’t just a brilliant satire, however. She also supports several causes in her personal life, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), as well as issues affecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. An openly gay woman herself, Jane and her wife, clinical psychologist Dr. Lara Embry, use their public profiles to bring attention to issues of equality, tolerance and acceptance.
