As a fan of her stand up for many years, I always appreciated her for really staying true to who she is, despite the potential for haters. Ellen refused to let one aspect of her life define without shoving that difference down anyones throat.
In the early 80's when female comics were still fighting to be heard, Ellen used her charming and humble humor to get noticed, versus vulgar over overly sexualized content. Can you see her being a foul-mouthed "Lil Kim" sex freak? *shudder*.
Her honesty allowed her to be consistent with her material -she rarely curses, never puts people down -and win the toughest audiences over. When her TV character 'came out', controversy flared up and quickly fizzled out. Even the most conservative fan can not deny the joyful, feel good humor of this woman. Ellen might not be the best dancer, but she'll be the first one on the floor encouraging you to move to your own music!
In a world as confusing as the one we live in, Ellen is a Girl Who Gets It.
