Q&A- CURLY HAIR CARE

You must hear this all the time, but I love your hair!
I'm mixed too and I think under the frizz and knots I have a similar texture.
It's been dyed and fried and since 17, I've forced it to be something it's not.
Much like the rest of my life. Interesting.
Anyways, I'm ready to give my hair and my wallet a break and I want to know
what is the best way to embrace my natural curls?

Tired of fighting what God gave me. Help!

ohhh you came to the right place!

like you, i foooought my hair so hard! i wished mine was a texture that i could style it and it would stay! once i relaxed it because thats what i thought everyone did. ya, no.

in my twenties, there were times i had no money, i mean "buying spaggetti sauce with my VISA" no money, but i made a way to have my huur diiid. i put all the attention on the outside of me, none on the inside. when i left the hair alone and let the natural curls repair themselves, it was then that i got the most compliments! haven't looked back.

    okokok...

    1-cold water.
    2-shampoo 2x's a week
    3-brush sparingly
    4-air dry
    5-get a good haircut

hot water = frizz. condition your hair every other day, combing through the conditioned hair with your fingers while in the shower. too much brushing (especially when wet) means breakage.

when you rinse conditioner, do it with cold water. seals the cuticle. and splurge on a good shampoo/conditioner thats really hydrating. (i like Purology. my sister swears by Moroccan Oil). totally worth the investment and a huge difference. huge.

let it air dry. if you must, blow dry on COOL at the last minute.

curly hair is tricky and mixed curly hair is Houdinni. take care of it.
a good trim every 2-3 months, nice layers (no square hair) should do it.

for product (dang i talk about hair right?) i LUH Keihls "Cream de Silk Groom". love it. when damp, when dry, makes it super shiny and not sticky. a light pomade - again not too waxy, not too runny - give the hold. toss the mousse, gels and anything else with alcohol.

i have embraced my hair after so long and it is ME! natural, touchable, wild, soft and fun! it's your best accessory, take care of it!

great response. YES..conditioning is KEY! I even leave a bit of conditioner in my hair when I get out of the shower - esp if I know I'm leaving it out. Helps combat the frizz and hold the curl..IMO.

I ONLY comb in the shower with conditioner in it!

I use a combo of Mousse and then some gel for some extra control around the front.

I've been there done that...relaxed, dyed, fried...when totally natural about 8 years ago..a good cut is ESSENTIAL to this process...LAYERS! I hate triangle hair! (aka - Side Show Bob from Simpsons! LOL!).

I'm a product whore and will try anything...and really - sometimes the drugstore products work best...just experiement!

A good sheen spray works nicely too!
